Kinross v Strathearn - 16th May 2011

The 2011 U13 Scottish cup campaign is an historic landmark for Kinross as it is the first time that the team has come from the initial Kwik Cricket squads we have being running since 2006. For most of the team their only access to cricket is through the club as the Kinross High School club is still in its infancy. The previous team make-up consisted of many players from Dollar Academy and Craigclowan prep school. Whilst the club is very keen to keep it’s established links with both these schools its very encouraging to see so many local players from the local high school.

Monday night was a typical May evening meaning poor light, cold and rain in the air. Kinross batted first and the opening pair of skipper Fred Culley and Rory Cooke looked settled from the off taking singles off almost every ball. Any deliveries which gave the batsman width were put away over he boundary with relative ease. The Scottish cup rules require that batsman retire at 30 and it was clear that both openers where going to reach that target with ease. Fred came off first putting vice captain, Matthew Gilmour in. The Cooke/Gilmour partnership was just as solid as the opening stand and Rory followed with his retirement shortly afterwards. Matthew was joined by Lachlan Peterson who immediately started hitting his trademark boundaries. With 5 overs to go Matthew retired and Gregor Stewart walked purposefully out. Peterson and Stewart played another solid knock and Kinross achieved 155 at the end of the 20th over without losing a wicket and 3 retirements.

As the weather continued to threaten rain a very swift tea break brought Strathearn into bat. As with the bat Kinross dominated the bowling. Wickets fell regularly with 10 year old Stuart McCreanor bowling a truly brilliant two overs for no runs and 1 wicket. Strathearn batted out the full 20 overs and posted 61 for 6. A good victory for Kinross and an excellent boost for the cup campaign
