Summer Cricket Camps
|
Cricket Development Officer (and KCC club coach), Kirsteen Ross has organised a full summer programme of cricket camps for
children and young people aged 7 to 14 years. All camps are suitable for both beginners and experienced players. Skills will be tailored to suit all levels of ability
and players will be coached according to age, current ability level and experience. All camps are suitable for both boys and girls. The camps combine cricket technique
and skills with games and fun competitions. Kirsteen said “The summer camp coaches have devised a fantastic week-long program of cricket working on the core skills of
batting, bowling and fielding as well basic physical literacy, agility, balance, co-ordination and speed. As the week progresses and players become more proficient,
coaches will help players develop at their own pace and help them to reach their full potential” The aims of the camps are to deliver cricket coaching in a safe,
happy, well structured player-centred environment with great coach/participant ratios and an emphasis on fun and enjoyment for all.

|
Alistair Dowell
|
The club is saddened to hear that Alistair Dowell, our oldest member, passed away last Friday
just short of his 90th birthday. Alistair was a regular player for Kinross CC in the 1930s and earned several Scotland
full team caps in the 1950s. We enjoyed Alistair’s visits to the club when he was able to provide a lot of interesting
historical information and Alistair was guest of honour at the club annual awards dinner two years ago. He will be sadly missed.

Intro to Umpiring
Sixteen members of Kinross
Cricket Club attended an Intro to Umpiring Evening
hosted by the club and held at Loch Leven Community
Campus. Scotland umpires, Sandy Scotland and Tom
Rurtherford whisked us through the basics of the laws of
cricket including No-Balls, Wides, Signalling, How Out,
and the very tricky LBW’s.
It was a very enjoyable evening,
made all the better by the wonderful supply of home
baking provided by KCC ladies player, Wendy Conway.
Undoubtedly this will help with
officiating at junior age groups and league matches
throughout the season and the delivery of the course
forms part of our ongoing development plans for cricket
in Kinross-shire. Each participant was presented with a
certificate of attendance.

Kinross Ladies
Win University Challenge
On Sunday 28th March, Gytes Sports
Centre, Peebles, played host to the inaugural Scottish
Universities Women’s Indoor Cricket Sixes competition.
Edinburgh University played hosts to teams from George
Watsons College, West of Scotland Women’s team and a
combined ladies and girls team from Kinross Cricket
Club.
.jpg)
The first match between West
Women and Kinross saw West Women score 33 runs in their
allotted 5 overs. Opening Kinross bowler, Fiona Willis
set the tone for the game putting the West Women under
pressure with a tight first over. Wicket keeper, Wendy
Conway’s excellent work behind the stumps proved to be
invaluable throughout the tournament. After a quick
change of innings, Kinross batted and lost an early
wicket but then captain, Kirsteen Ross and debutant,
Elaine McCreanor batted solidly to reach 34 with an over
to spare without the loss of another wicket.
The second match saw a strong
George Watsons team beat Edinburgh University with an
over to spare.
In the third game, Kinross were
asked to bat by George Watson’s. Kinross were initially
very reserved in their batting scoring only 1 when they
lost their first wicket with the last ball of the first
over. However, 13 year old all rounder, Zoe Conway took
on the mantle of lead batsman, ably supported by big
hitting Laura Walker in her debut cricket match and the
pair quickly had the fielding side in disarray as
Kinross raced to 57 in the following 4 overs. Watson’s
seemed overwhelmed by such strong batting and they
struggled to score against some excellent fielding and
good bowling. The pick of the bowlers was Lauren
Megginson who gave away only 4 runs in her over. Watsons
played out their 5 overs scoring 38 for 2 wickets.
Kinross Ladies were now set for
an unexpected victory if they could beat Edinburgh
University.
Kinross won the toss and put
Edinburgh University into bat. The strategy seemed
perfect as Edinburgh found runs difficult against some
tight bowling and fielding. Edinburgh had only reached
15 after 3 overs when team captain and Scotland Wildcats
player Cat Tams started to hit out. Edinburgh Uni scored
20 runs in the final 2 overs giving a very competitive
innings score of 35. Kinross scored steadily keeping
calm under pressure against some very good, accurate
bowling. With 2 overs to go, Kinross needed 14 runs to
win, however an outstanding over from the Edinburgh
University captain left the Kinross Ladies needing a
substantial 11 off the last over. Some good calling and
fast running between the wickets by Kirsteen Ross and
Lauren Megginson took Kinross to victory with only 2
balls to spare.
Kinross Ladies were overall
tournament winners with George Watson’s College taking
second place and Edinburgh University and West Women
completing the final placings. Zoe Conway won Kinross
Player of the Tournament for her excellent performance
against Watsons and was presented with a cricket top
from Cricket Scotland.

Boys Selected for Scotland U18s
1st XI
players, Peter Ross and Nick Farrar have been
selected for the Scotland under-18 squad. This
is a marvellous achievement as both boys are
very young for this age group with Nick only 16
and Peter, just 17. This is a wonderful
achievement as this squad is preparing for
qualification for the 2012 under-19 World Cup.
The European part of the World Cup qualifiers
begins in Summer 2010 and so preparations have
begun in earnest at Cricket Scotland to prepare
the squad to move forward for this very exciting
challenge. Congratulations to them both.

Kinross Cricket
Club – Best Cricket Club In The World?

Friday 13th December 2009 didn’t
hold any fears for the cricket club. On that day we were
named The Wisden Cricketer magazine’s Gray Nicolls
Cricket Club of the Year. Wisden Cricketer is the
world’s leading cricket publication and is distributed
globally. Within 24 hours the club was being featured as
major news in most of the Scottish daily newspapers as
well as news channels as far away as India and
Argentina. The Scotsman Newspaper ran a great feature on
page 3 proclaiming the headline “Scots cricket club is
best in world!”.
The Wisden award is in
recognition of the success the club has achieved in
getting children and adults of all ages playing cricket
as well as the clubs performances in junior and seniors
leagues and Scottish Cup competitions. In addition to
the international acclaim the club gets £500 worth of
cricket equipment from leading manufacturer Gray-Nicolls.
Nick Wilton, Sales Director of Gray-Nicolls said: "Over
the past 5 years Kinross has come from nowhere to being
leaders in Scottish cricket. They have done fantastic
work giving kids the opportunity to play and Gray-Nicolls
are delighted to help such a dynamic club."
The International coverage
brought another benefit as we were contacted by
Joondalup-Kinross cricket club from Kinross, Perth,
Western Australia. We are now in the process of setting
up a twinning agreement with them which will see some of
our teenage players getting the opportunity to go to
Australia and play for the southern hemisphere Kinross
CC.
Cricket Scotland visited the
club to make a video of the road to success and this can
be see on YouTube at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfxrvVt_Loc. The film clip
is entitled Team Kinross.

1st XI v Strathmore Match
Report Archie has filed his report for
the 1st XI visit to Strathmore and in it he seems to be
testing his journalistic integrity as he claimed to have
had the top down in his convertible on the way to the
game, on the other hand he also describes a full length
catch by veteran John Ross, so perhaps all is not
lost...

2009 Junior
Awards The annual
junior awards were held at The Windlestrae Hotel on
Monday 14th September. John Ross welcomed everybody
and commented on how well the juniors
had done this season and how they were a credit to their parents,
themselves and the club. He then took us through
the different steps a junior has to go through to get to
represent Scotland.
Thanks were given to those very many parents and players
who help the club out with transport to matches, support
at matches, scoring, umpiring, making teas, helping with
events and setting out the pitch.
Kirsteen Ross gave a special thanks
to all those who took part in and helped to organise the
Fun Run.
The coaches were thanked for all their hard work and
dedication. Prizes were
awarded by our chairman, Mr John Ross.
The following members received certificates of
achievement and prizes.

Representative Honours
Congratulations to Kinross
Ladies player, Claire Jackson, for her selection to the
under-15 Scotland girls squad following trials held in
Stirling recently. Claire is the first girl in the club
EVER to make it to the Scotland representative female
age groups. Another success for the club to celebrate.
Very well done.
1st XI player, Peter Ross has
been selected for the under-17 Scotland team to play in
the ECB two-day county championships as well as
travelling to Belfast to play in the ICC European
Division 1 championships. This
is an excellent result for Peter as he has had to
recover from two broken thumbs and a back strain early
this season. He has worked extremely hard to overcome
these challenges and has put in some outstanding
performances recently.
Club under-15 players, Nick
Farrar and George Buchannan-Smith have been selected for the Scotland under-15 team
and they travel to Shropshire and Herefordshire next week
to play some one-day inter county matches and then onto
the European Under 15 Championships.
The club wishes all four
players the best of luck this summer.

The club is featured on page 89
of the July edition. In addition to the article and
photographs, the club is being provided with a new kit
bag which will be used by the 2nd XI in their league
matches.
The award recognises the club’s
improvements over the past 5 years and Kinross Cricket
Club is now automatically into the Wisden Club of the
Year competition.

Kinross-shire Primary Schools
Kwik Cricket Tournament
Cleish Primary School were
crowned winners for the second year running of the
Kinross-shire Primary Schools kwik cricket competition
hosted by Kinross Cricket Club at their Kinross House
ground on Friday 12th June 2009. Eight teams took part,
including 2 from Kinross Primary, 2 from Fossoway
Primary, 2 from Portmoak Primary and one each from
Cleish and Milnathort Primary Schools. There was a great
deal of excellent quality cricket from all the teams and
all the games were played competitively and in the
“Spirit of Cricket” .
Cleish will now go on to
represent the area in the Kinross, Tayside, Angus and
Fife Regional round within the next couple of weeks.
This follows a 3 month program
of schools coaching carried out by club coaches in all
the Kinross-shire Primary Schools. Two of the schools
have now set up after school cricket activities to meet
the demands of their pupils that enjoy the game. Many of
the youngsters involved have joined Kinross Cricket
Club’s junior section which has well over 100 junior
members.
Club Tournament Organiser and
Schools Coach, Kirsteen Ross said “It is fantastic to
see so many young players participating in cricket and
especially the growing number of girls. It is clear to
see there is a lot of sporting talent in the primary
schools in Kinross-shire. We would like to thank the
schools for the warm welcome they extend to our club
coaches and their support and encouragement for our
“cricket taster” program that we run each year to
introduce children to the game”

club and schools coach, Kirsteen Ross

Boys do well in Arbroath
An U11 team travelled to
Arbroath for the Moira Shaw Kwik Cricket Tournament and
put in a fantastic performance, loosing narrowly in the
semi-finals to the hosts.
In their first match, they just
lost out to Largo by 15 runs but then recorded victories
over Strathmore and Watsonians to see them qualify for
the semi-finals where they met the hosts who proved to
be too strong for them on this occasion.

The boys all received medals on
the day with one of the parents saying that their son
was chuffed with his medal and so he should be.
Well done boys and a big thanks
to cliff for travelling with the boys to make it
possible to play the game, without you it simply would
not have happened.
