Ladies Match Reports

Kinross Ladies V R H Costorphine

On Friday 18th June the we arrived at Royal High Corstorphine on a beautiful summer’s evening, slightly short staffed. As it turned out so was the opposition so onwards and upwards with eight on our team and nine on theirs.

Kinross, captained by Anita Collins, won the toss and put Corstophine Ladies in to bat. The opening bowlers, Claire Jackson and Laura Walker bowled four tight overs with Laura getting a breakthrough in the fourth clean bowling their number two, for one run. More wickets followed with Zoe Conway taking 2 for 17 and at one stage on a hat-trick. Anita Collins took 2 for 12 and Stephanie Crolla with an outstanding caught and bowled finishing on 1 for 14. The fielding was inspirational – tight and focused at all times. Kirsteen Ross excelled herself taking a diving one handed catch as well as a direct hit run out. Anita added a run-out to her efforts and Claire Jackson cleaned up danger girl Katherine Russell who had already retired on 25 and come back in. The opposition were all out for 78 runs after 15 overs.

After a quick breather Kinross came in to chase down the runs. Things started shakily with great line and length from the opening bowlers Anita Collins, opening, was cleaned bowled for 3 runs and Zoe Conway quickly followed for 0. Kirsteen Ross and Laura Walker saved the day with stubborn determination, with Kirsteen scoring 17 runs (retired) with her quick eye, good calling, and smart tactics. Laura after a slow start, received a glancing blow to the cheek from the cricket ball, which seemed to fire her up as she went on to top score retiring on 27 runs smashing three 4’s and a 6 picking the gaps as any pro would. Stephanie Crolla came in to capitalise on her team mates’ success hitting three 4’s and, with Kirsteen’s continued dogged support, scored 20 runs and took Kinross to 3 for 79 for another fantastic victory after only 12 overs.

No woman of the match was voted, but captain Anita Collins said 'I have to vote Kirsteen Ross for her intelligent batting innings and outstanding fielding, she stood out as the all rounder of the day'.

Cricket Scotland National Women’s Indoor Championship - 18th April 2010

Having recently won the Scottish Universities title the next tournament was the Cricket Scotland National Women’s Indoor Championship held in Perth. Kinross were clearly determined to continue their success as they faced Regional teams from East & West of Scotland, a combined Central, Angus and Borders team as well as St Andrews University and a team of Kinross Under-15 girls. The first match was against St Andrews University and Kinross were under the kosh from the start as they were all out for 36 in only 4 overs. St Andrews felt they had an easy win until the Kinross bowlers started taking wickets with regularity. The rapid fall of wickets and some excellent fielding restricted St Andrews to only 29 in their 5 overs and Kinross claimed their first victory. Next was a straightforward win over the East/West team with Kinross winning by 45 runs.

After a quick lunch, Kinross ladies faced Kinross U15 girls. The girls fought valiantly with some very promising bowling and good fielding but the senior ladies were far too strong. Laura Walker proved to be the senior team big hitter as she scored 51 in 3 overs including a truly amazing 31 off the last over. Kinross now faced the tournament favourites and current title holders SportCentral. Kinross batted first and set a total of 46. Central lost their first wicket with the first ball of the first over with a second 2 balls later as Lauren Megginson bowled the best over of the tournament taking 2 for 2. Central continued to lose wickets but also kept up with the required run rate. The last over saw the tension rise as Kinross put down a very difficult boundary catch which then went over for 6 leaving Central with only 2 needed off 4 balls to win. Two dot balls followed but then Central found a gap and the match was theirs. Calculators came out as Kinross and Central had equal wins of 3 out of 4. No one within the Kinross team was sure of the position until Cricket Scotland Women’s Cricket Development Officer, Lea Tsui announced that Kinross Ladies were the tournament winners. Kinross Ladies had now won both the main Scottish Indoor titles in the space of 3 weeks.
